Our Story

Beacon residents Stephen Yount & Frank Roderick Martinez opened Solstad House General Store in 2019 with a goal to connect with the community and promote their mission of senior-aged dog rescue.

Our desire from the beginning has been to offer a memorable and hospitable shopping experience with an emphasis on hand-made and small batch products that look, smell, and taste great; a place where our friends and neighbors, as well as Beacon's many visitors, can hang out, find unique and affordable merch, or just pop in with their dogs for a quick treat.

Our greatest joy comes from rescuing and adopting senior-aged dogs. Our active 6-dog pack of seniors has inspired our most important product category: The Beacon Lights. At the front of the store, there is a colorful, stately selection of vintage lamps. 100% of the proceeds from the sales of these lamps is sent directly to Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary in Mt Juliet, TN.

Fun Fact

We are often asked where the name “Solstad House” came from. It was actually the name of a little quasi folk-pop band that Stephen played with occasionally in Brooklyn. After we moved to Beacon in 2016 and decided to open a General Store, we couldn’t decide on a name we both liked. Then one day, out of the blue, it dawned on us that it would be a great name for a store!
